Active Travel is exciting project in North Norfolk, seeking to provide improved safe, pleasant, multipurpose cycle and pedestrian routes for people of all ages and abilities. The Three Rivers Way is the name for the suggested local route linking the communities of Potter Heigham, Ludham,  Horning, Hoveton.

The Active Travel Project wanted to find answers to these questions:

- Would you use a pathway linking the local villages?
- Would you like a pathway designed for walkers, wheelchairs, electric buggies, pushchairs and cycles?

With the help of a researcher from UEA and the Planning and Transportation Department of Norfolk County Council, information was gathered and surveys were undertaken.

What people said then

ACTIVE TRAVEL PROJECT SURVEY June 2007

People were asked where and why there should be a route.
33 local people responded asking for a route between Hoveton and Potter Heigham or links between villages on this route. Reasons given included: Better links needed for recreation, work, health etc; Link villages, help holidaymakers; Safety, fitness, link communities; Join villages, help walking, cycling, mobility scooters; Make the countryside accessible, safer, better links.
People were asked what the benefits would be. The majority said it would benefit local shops and businesses, that it would provide an alternative to a busy traffic route and give access to outdoor recreation. Asked about existing provision, people said it was non-existent, or what exists is poorly maintained.
ACTIVE TRAVEL CONSULTATION July 2007

People were asked by questionnaire about their use of a possible route.

157 local people responded and just over half were women. About 25% were under the age of 40. A third of respondents were over 60.

Almost 60% said that they would use the route either on a daily basis or at least once a week.

Almost 60% said that it would increase the number of times they would use local businesses and amenities.

Over 50% said that it would help to reduce their car journeys on a daily or weekly basis.

The results of the survey and consultation showed that the following aims of the Active Travel Project could be supported by     this route – the Three Rivers Way

- improve accessibility to local services, employment, schools, shops and  facilities
- increase levels of physical activity in the area
- reduce car journeys of less than FIVE miles
     - raise the local economic base through tourism
